Jewish Genealogy: The Name Change Myth

Geneology
Laura Gold, president of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Los Angeles, became interested in name changes when she learned that her mother’s original birth name was Srebnik, not Silverman. Through her research, she realized that, contrary to popular belief, name changes did not happen at Ellis Island. In this presentation, she will discuss the immigration and citizenship process, focusing on when and why names changed and how to prove the name change. It will provide you with the tools to identify your own family’s missing name and to explain the change of name process.
